Aiken Center Shows Works by Tyrone Geter & USCA Students

Aiken Center for the Arts in Aiken, SC, is displaying The Art of Tyrone Geter, an extensive exhibit by this highly esteemed artist. Geter brings his unique and provocative perspective of the African-American experience to the Aiken Center's Children's Gallery, where his slice-of-life oil paintings will be on display from Oct. 5-28. Also on view at the Center will be USCA Student Works, featuring works by USC-Aiken art students of Al Beyer.

Geter will be present on Oct. 19, 7-9pm, when the Center will host A Taste of Wine & Art. The evening is an annual festivity where art, music, wines, and food from the finest restaurants in Aiken are brought together in an effort to raise funds for the Center.

Geter is renowned for decades of awards, including The Black Caucus of American Library Association Award, as well as Best of Show and Best in Art Awards at the Akron Arts Expo. Geter has participated in over a dozen one-man shows and nearly 50 group exhibitions over the past 22 years. His works are internationally recognized, spanning not only the Eastern US, but also Nigeria, China, and Senegal, with private collections found as far as the UK and the Middle East. More recently, Geter has undertaken book and poster illustration.

Geter has taught art and painting in a variety of schools and universities, including the University of Akron, OH, Ohio University's Center for Afro-American Studies, and Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria. He currently resides in Columbia, SC, teaching art at Benedict College, one of the historically black colleges and universities in the Southeast.

Al Beyer, art professor at the University of South Carolina at Aiken, explains that USCA Student Works will be an exhibit of nearly two-dozen pieces. There will be drawings, oil & acrylic paintings, photography, and computer photo prints, a relatively new medium available on the campus. All will be on view in the Center's Gallery One.

Beyer is enthusiastic about the opportunity to have his students' works shown. "I feel we have a full and active program at USCA, and I look forward to sharing it with the community," said Beyer.
