Gibbes Museum of Art Staff Solves Mystery of location of Edward Hopper Painting

Edward Hopper's painting Charleston was recently found after disappearing more than 30 years ago, and is currently on loan to the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC. Since it resurfaced in a famous auction house, there has been much speculation about the location depicted in the famous painting. However, recently, while archiving photographs, Gibbes Collections Manager, Scott Zetrouer found the exact same scene that is in the Hopper watercolor. It turns out the photograph was taken in the summer of 1933 by visiting artist, Prentiss Taylor. His photograph labeled simply Mazyckborough, is of the eastern side of the peninsula between Chapel and Calhoun Streets. Supporting research from historic maps confirms that the buildings in the Hopper painting are the exact same as the ones in Taylor's photograph. "We are so excited to have found this photograph and to have determined the location for the owners," said Curator of Collections, Angela Mack.

Now that the location has been determined, Mack says she's attempting to find out what about the dilapidated buildings in this area would strike interest in both of these visiting artists.

The famous Hopper watercolor is on loan to the Gibbes from a private collector for an unspecified amount of time, and is currently hanging in the South Rotunda Gallery.
