Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Features Modern Art Exhibition

Alongside drastically new ideas from scientists and scholars, American artists in the early 20th century developed experimental, subjective styles that contrasted sharply with conventional representations of nature and the human figure. They looked for inspiration in technology, science and the urban landscape - rocking the art world and the American public with their fragmented forms, non-naturalistic colors and unique expression of modem life.

Such characteristics are evident in Modernism from the Weatherspoon, an exhibition of early American modem art on loan to Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, from the Weatherspoon Art Gallery of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, in Greensboro, NC. Organized by Dr. Will South, the Weatherspoon's curator of collections, the exhibition includes some of the best modernist works from the Weatherspoon's permanent collection and will be on view at HMA until Dec. 30, 2001.

The exhibition offers an excellent opportunity to learn more about modern art, a term that is consistently - and incorrectly - confused with contemporary art.

"These are not synonymous terms," said Hickory Museum of Art Curator Mary Agnes Beach. "Modern art refers to any work created in a specific time period - about 1905 to 1960 - or to any work created using the styles of modernism, which include cubism, constructivism and surrealism.

"On the other hand," Beach continued, "it is appropriate to use the term 'contemporary art' when referring to a recently-created work. Something an artist creates this year could be described as 'contemporary art."'

The exhibition includes paintings, sculpture and drawings by 35 artists, including Arthur Dove, Ilya Bolotowsky, Konrad Cramer, John Storrs and Carl Holty. As a companion to the exhibition, American modernist works from Hickory Museum of Art's own permanent collection will be on view in the Gifford Gallery.
