October Issue 2002

Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC, Features Exhibit of Works by George C. Aid

Tryon Painters and Sculptors will host a retrospective exhibition of paintings, drawings, and etchings by George C. Aid (1872 - 1938), curated by Michael McCue in Gallery One of the Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC. The exhibition entitled, Paris and Tryon: the Art of George C. Aid (1872 - 1938), will be on view from Oct. 13 through Nov. 5, 2002. This exhibition is the first retrospective of work by George C. Aid since the artist's death in 1938.

In 1899, Aid traveled to France and took up residence as an expatriate artist building a solid reputation as a painter and printmaker. His circle included a number of artists of the Impressionist movement including Lawton Parker, Richard E. Miller, and Frederick Frieseke - as well as American artist John Marin with whom Aid shared his techniques for printing etchings while they both lived in the same building in Paris.

Noted for scenes of European architecture and "townscapes," Aid's etchings contributed to the revival of interest in etchings in America during the early years of the 20th century.

Returning to America at the outbreak of World War I and discovering the emerging artists' colony in Tryon, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Aid followed an interest developed in France by acquiring a grape vineyard where he established his studio. Creating oils and developing a unique drawing style using French chalk. Aid remained in Tryon until his death in 1938.

In conjunction with the exhibition, McCue has authored, Paris & Tryon: George C. Aid and His Artistic Circles in France & North Carolina, to be released by Condar Press in Oct. Information is at (www.condar.com/press).
