Transylvania County Arts Center in Brevard, NC, Presents Guild Exhibition

The Transylvania County Arts Center in Brevard, NC, is presenting the, Transylvania Art Guild 2003 Exhibition, which will be on view through Nov. 11, 2003. The exhibition features original works by 48 guild members.

"Our membership includes men and women, and is not limited to Transylvania County," said Shirl Thomas of Cedar Mountain, NC, the exhibition coordinator. "Some of the art will be for sale."

Although the guild has been active since 1972 promoting interest in and appreciation of the visual arts, this is the first comprehensive juried exhibition of their work. The primarily two-dimensional art in the show ranges from realistic to non-objective in a variety of media: oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and mixed-media.

Mary Alice Braukman, a well-known watercolorist who currently directs the esteemed Kanuga Watercolor Workshops, is the selector and judge. Merit awards will be given in nine categories as well as a prize for Best in Show. In addition, a Viewer's Choice award will be determined by the votes of spectators.

Henry Rogers, a resident of Black Mountain, NC, was the guild's first president and a mainstay directing its focus through the years. Besides providing its members with opportunities to learn, work together and show their artwork, the organization is dedicated to the enhancement of quality of life through the arts.

Along with regular monthly meetings, which include an exhibit/contest and a speaker or demonstration, the guild offers weekly plein air painting (in the open) or live model sketching. The guild also provides volunteer and financial support to other art events and organizations.

During the summer months, the guild promotes art shows on the Courthouse lawn, in Brevard, where visitors can view and purchase art.

"The guild is a very active group, and we welcome new members. Call me for more information at 828/885-8229," said Thomas.
