McMaster Gallery in Columbia, SC, Presents Clay Invitational

The McMaster Gallery in the Department of Art of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, is presenting an invitational exhibition of ceramic works by noted ceramic artists from throughout the US with the exhibition, FORMS: A Clay Invitational. The exhibit is on view through Oct. 10, 2004.

Approximately ten thousand years ago mankind discovered that clay gained great strength when subjected to intense heat. From that time forward an evolution in the ceramic arts has spread and adapted to the individual needs of each culture and artistic sensibility.

Artists included in this exhibit are: Sally Brogden, Scott Chamberlin, Anne Currier, Gary Erickson, Chris Gustin, Richard Hirsh, Brian Hively, Ron Kovatch, Yih-Wen Kuo, Eva Kwong, Stephanie Lanter, Jae Won Lee, Jill Oberman, Thomas Orr, Jeanne Quinn, Annabeth Rosen, James Shrosree, Debbie Sigel, and Jamie Walker.

Ceramic objects are associated with the function they serve. FORMS: A Clay Invitational attempts to present a broad view of contemporary ceramics that deal with visual appearance before function. This exhibit comprised of works by fourteen leading figures in contemporary American ceramics offers a unique opportunity to view multiple approaches to working in clay. Within this exhibition the viewer experiences architectural, biomorphic, conceptual, minimal and traditional works.
