Morris & Whiteside Galleries on Hilton Head Island, SC, Presents 16th Annual Renaissance Auction

Morris & Whiteside Galleries, a nationally recognized fine arts gallery and auction house will present its Sixteenth Annual Renaissance Auction on Oct. 29, 2004, in the Elizabeth Wallace Theater of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, on Hilton Head Island, SC.

The two-hundred lot auction will feature significant American paintings and sculpture, including works by Andrew Wyeth, Stephen Scott Young, Mary Whyte and West Fraser, as well as members of the National Academy of Western Art, Cowboy Artists of America, Plein Air Painters of America, National Watercolor Society and other leading artists organizations throughout the United States.

A fully illustrated, color catalogue is available through the galleries for $25. including shipping and handling. In its fifth year in South Carolina, the Renaissance Auction has become a major fine arts auction in the southeast following its move from Santa Fe, NM, in Oct. 2000. Last year the event produced over two million dollars in sales with top lots that included Howard Terpning's War Cry to the Sun, that sold for $308,000.; Clark Hulings' Grand Canyon from the South Rim, that fetched $246,400. and Wilson Hurley's Easter Sunday Morning - Grand Canyon, that was hammered down at $196,000.

Significant lots for this year's event include Andrew Wyeth's Ocean House with a pre-sale estimate of $150,000 to $200,000; Eanger I. Couse's Flute Player - Moonlight, estimated at $40,000 to $60,000 and Herman W. Hansen's Courier with an Emergency Order from the Front, that is expected to bring between $17,000 and $20,000, and a signature, 1972 casein by William Halsey that is estimated at $12,000 to $15,000. Also, of special note will be Charleston, SC, artists Mary Whyte, whose watercolor, Far Away, is estimated at $20,000 to $22,000 and West Fraser, whose plein air oil, Rhythms of Light, is expected to bring $12,000 to $14,000. This is the first year for both artists in the sale.

All works will be available for preview at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Oct. 25 - 29, from 10am to 5pm and a preview reception will be held from 5:30-7pm on Friday.
