October Issue 2005

Modern Eye Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Daniel Phill

Modern Eye Gallery in Charlotte, NC, proudly presents, Daniel Phill: purely abstract, featuring the abstract expressionist work of California artist, Daniel Phill. The exhibition opens Oct. 7 and continues through Nov. 12, 2005.

Born in Tacoma, WA, Phill began his art studies at Washington State University and completed his BFA degree at the renowned San Francisco Art Institute. He went on to complete a Masters of Fine Arts at Stanford University where he studied under some of the contemporary art world's best known painters.

Phill's work in this show ranges in size from large-scale oils on canvas and acrylics on paper to smaller mixed-media monotypes. This exhibit showcases "a body of work, which is derived from influences of popular culture, yet the flow of inspiration, whether mental or physical experiences, is the heart and soul of his work", as notes California art critic, Jean McKig.

Phill's paintings, in a sense, refer to an act of thinking. McKig further states: "his large fields of color serve both as a physical representation of thought and as a guide to the emotions produced by intellectual perception". As an abstract expressionist, Daniel's work is about release from dictation. He allows the viewer the ultimate freedom to discern his own interpretation of the bold compositions. Each work is imbued with a heightened sense of space, movement, and color, thus creating a unique and engaging relationship with the viewer.

Phill has an unerring eye for color harmonies and spatial relationships, which invariably touches the heart and soul, and is the trademark for his aesthetic. The surfaces record the spontaneous building up and scraping away of paint and the artist's reaction to that process in the tradition of abstract expressionism. In the words of San Francisco art critic, S. Campbell: "In the creative process of painting, Phill manages to work free of doubt and over-evaluation, trusting himself and self-reflecting without being too self-conscious. It may be a mature sensibility that comes with solid artistic training and years of dedicated labor in the arts that gives him this important ability. Whatever the reason, the resulting work is consistently painterly and powerful".
