Transylvania County Arts Council in Brevard, NC, Presents Pottery Exhibit

The Transylvania County Arts Council in Brevard, NC, will feature handcrafted pottery by ten potters from across the US, in a show curated by Terry Gess. The exhibit will open Oct. 3 and continue through Nov. 4, 2005 at the Transylvania Community Arts Center.

Terry Gess

Works by Terry Gess, the show curator, will be included in the show. Gess is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and a former resident potter at the Penland School of Crafts. His new book, 500 Pitchers, will be released by Lark Books in Spring 2006. His pottery takes inspiration from Medieval English jugs and Persian jars, which he values for their "clunky forms, thick lips and age-worn surfaces."

The exhibit will include pottery by Nick Joerling from Penland, NC. His work is represented in many public and private collections, including the Roger Corsaw Collection of Functional American Ceramics at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Joerling is the son of Brevard resident Lois Joerling.

In addition, the show includes the work of eight other potters: Jeff Kleckner from Bethlehem, PA, Steve and Becky Lloyd from Princeton, MN, and Naomi Daeglish, Michael Hunt, Shawn Ireland, Courtney Martin and Shane Mickey; all from Bakersville, NC.

Most works in the exhibition will be functional pieces, often salt and wood-fired stoneware. Bowls, vessels, platters and other works will display the artists' varied aesthetic explorations of form, color and texture.

The Transylvania County Arts Council is a nonprofit organization with the mission to nurture and celebrate the arts in Transylvania County, which is supported in part by the Transylvania County Schools; the NC Arts Council; and by more than 400 members.
