Art Beyond Tradition.com is an exhibition of extraordinary art wrought by a baker's dozen (13) of exceptional artists. Their art is anything but traditional. The show opens on Oct. 5, in the Walter Greer Gallery of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Hilton Head Island, SC. The exhibition continues through Oct. 15, 2006. Participating artists include: Ann Hakala, Jo Dye, Vickie Jourdan, Cindy Chiappetta, Art Cornell, Stephen Kishel, Marlies Williams, Deanna Bowdish, May Reisz, Marilyn Dizikes, Mary Jane Martin, Arla Crumlich Wible, and Irene K. Williamson.

This is the first time these artists have collaborated to launch a joint exhibition of their non-traditional art. It's an exhibition unlike any other fresh, new, modern, abstract, different, bold turning the Arts Center into Hilton Head's own Mecca of Modern Art for a 10 day period.

Each artist expresses concepts in a singular fashion yet each has embraced the concept of Art Beyond Tradition. They are from Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, SC, and Beaufort, SC, and all are accomplished artists. It is work that has to be seen to be appreciated, and all of the artwork is for sale.

The artists' creative use of color, form, materials and composition, results in unique and exciting paintings, sculptures and mixed media pieces. Don't expect to see portraits, landscapes or still-lifes or other traditional artwork. Instead, look forward to paintings and abstractions - pure and simple; mixed media pieces - that combine a variety of materials; sculpture - in metals and more; collages - built with layers of papers and found objects - all brought together for an unique art show, pulsing with color and enticing by design; a visual feast for the eyes and the senses.

Irene Williamson

"This show defines art beyond the traditional. It's an incredibly dynamic explosion of creativity and talent that is out of the ordinary," says Irene K. Williamson, one of the artists and an organizer of the show. "There are very few opportunities for us to show such a variety of non-traditional art as we have assembled here, all in one place. That is why we decided to pool our talents and resources and create something really new on the Hilton Head art scene in the perfect venue of the Arts Center."

Anne Hakala says, "Each painting is a new adventure, using different choices of media and technique." While Vickie Jourdan admits that "it is so exciting and challenging to create a pleasing work of art in a non-objective way. Design, composition, texture and the play of colors against one another all contribute to the excitement I have in creating paintings that express my ever-changing emotions, moods and fleeting moments."

Understanding non-traditional art is not a requirement. The work just needs to be experienced, contemplated and enjoyed, one piece at a time, one sensation after another.
