Guild of Beaufort Galleries in Beaufort, SC, Offers Fall Art Walk on Oct. 28, 2006

Tina B. Fripp and Dan Brown

Beaufort, SC, has been named as one of the top 100 best art towns in the United States for the past 10 years. Beaufort's finest art galleries will open their doors to bring some of the best art and artists the Lowcountry has to offer during the ninth Guild of Beaufort Galleries Fall Art Walk. The event is free, open to the public and scheduled for Oct. 28, 2006, from 5-7:30pm.

Art lovers can expect to be entertained by wonderful notes and tunes of street musicians as they stroll along Bay Street. This group of minstrels will be leading the path to 11 different galleries. Each gallery will feature a specific exhibit with focus on a particular artist or subject matter.

Visitors can look forward to an array of visual masterpieces and delights including original paintings, drawings, photography, and antique prints. In addition, galleries will feature pottery, jewelry, handcrafted furniture, sweetgrass baskets, and other whimsical works. Those interested in sculpture will be pleased with the display of metal, stone, ceramic, soft, and glass pieces. Whether you are in search of that traditional landscape, folk art or abstract painting, both lookers and buyers will be enticed by what the Guild of Beaufort Galleries has to offer.

The Art walk is planned during the Fall Tour of Homes, taking place Oct. 27 & 28, 2006. Visitors can come and enjoy the art offerings of our historical coastal town and tour local homes.

Here is a sampling of what some of the galleries will be offering:

Art & Soul, established in 1999, features the art of fifty local and regional artists. Works on display include original paintings, photographs, hand-made glass bead and other jewelry, both functional and decorative pottery, and wood and soft sculpture. Art and Soul will feature the work of Mary Ann Riley during the Art Walk. Riley is known for her abstract landscapes of the Lowcountry, painted in her loose brushstroke style using vivid acrylics. Living on the edge of a marsh has provided her with inspiration to capture the various moods and light of local marshland and river landscapes. Riley continues to work on her popular series of paintings, including Two Palms and the slightly more whimsical Red Dog. She has recently added figurative work and interiors to her portfolio.

More than 90 regional professional artists display their work in the Beaufort Art Association Gallery. The spotlight for the fall Art Walk will be on Ellen Long whose vision and guidance were instrumental in founding the gallery. Long is a prize-winning artist and interior designer who paints vivid watercolors of life in the Beaufort Lowcountry. She has recently developed a method of safely framing watercolors without glass or plexi, thus solving the problem of bouncing reflections which interfere with a viewer's ability to see a painting in the bright Beaufort atmosphere.

The Craftseller will be featuring the work of Mt. Pleasant, SC's, Ann Seibel during the Art Walk. She will be on hand to describe and talk about her craft which involves the creation of intricate silhouettes made from genuine dried palmetto leaves and other natural enhancements such as local seed pods. Seibel's exquisite silhouettes are handmade depictions exemplifying Southern traditions such as "Shagginí Palmettos", the SC State dance and "Carolina Pineapple", a symbol of Southern hospitality.

Bay St. Gallery presents the original works of 10 premiere Southeastern artists whose work reflects many different aspects of what is best about the Lowcountry and to celebrate the beautiful fragility of this unique wetlands area. A variety of media including oil, acrylic, pastel, printmaking, collage, and sculpture encompass Bay St. Gallery. South Carolina's finest collection of sweetgrass baskets compliments the other works.

Various local artists will be painting throughout the day at Indigo Gallery. Sandra Baggette, Gloria Dalvini and Janet Mozley will all be featured during the Art Walk as well as Richard St. Onges, who will demonstrate the weaving process for his outstanding Nantucket baskets during the evening hours.

The I. Pinckney Simons Gallery will feature a new collection of paintings by South Carolina artist, J. Michael Kennedy. Vividly, colorful large Lowcountry landscapes, street scenes, and waterfront views will be the highlight of this exhibition. This artist constantly reminds the viewer of the beauty and serenity in "our own back yard." Kennedy portrays his unique style in oil on canvas with the use of bold blues, fiery skies, and incredible reflections on water will truly capture one's attention as the excitement and ambiance of each painting unfolds. Also, many new works by other award winning artists will be presented in the special gallery collection for this Fall Art Walk.

The Rhett Art Gallery features five generations of Rhett family artists specializing in scenes of the lowcountry and Beaufort area. Watercolors and acrylics by Nancy Ricker Rhett, wood carvings and oils by William Means Rhett, Jr., and oils by William Means Rhett III adorn the gallery walls. Giclee's, Civil War memorabilia, and an extensive antique map collection complete the gallery.

Shipman Gallery features the works of Barbara Shipman and is dedicated to both previous collectors of her works and first time clientele. Shipman has owned and operated her studio/gallery since 1978. She is an award winner for Best of Show in South Carolina as well as Best Local Artist for several years. She is a Signature Artist in the Southern Watercolor Society. Shipman has also been included in the prestigious American Watercolor Society's Annual Show at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. Her art features a wide array of styles, mediums and subject matter.

The Art walk is free and open to the public. Maps are available in each participating gallery displaying the purple and white guild logo in their front windows. Purple and white banners and balloons will also mark guild members. Refreshments will be served at each gallery. Come out and enjoy what Beaufort has to offer, you will be glad you did.
