Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Kathy Rann and Diane Dean

The Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, will present two exhibitions featuring works by Kathy Rann and Diane Dean at the Art League Gallery in Pineland Station, on view from Oct. 9 - Nov. 10, 2007.

Kathy Rann

Kathy Rann's oils, watercolors and pastels celebrate the inherent beauty of nature and the human soul. Her fascination with the scenic Lowcountry and her travels provide her with never ending inspiration.

Already at a young age Rann found great joy in drawing and painting while listening to music. As an emerging artist she cultivated her two muses, painting and music. Rann describes her work, "I create 'visual symphonies' that evoke chromatic melodies," and she makes her colors sing on canvas. From each subject she seeks to capture the rhythm and harmony of life, be it the marshland, the flora and fauna of the Lowcountry, and the special people, who touch her heart and motivate her to capture their portrait.

Rann graduated from Erskine College in Due West, SC, and continued with a dual focus on art and music. She taught in Winston-Salem, NC, and then worked as a reading specialist in Beaufort County. Extensive travel to Western Europe, Hawaii, and Mexico with her husband Arthur also feeds her inspiration. A one week group trip to Haiti on a medical mission left a deep impression on Rann; she was fascinated by the Haitian people and their distinctive culture. Her Gullah portraits give a vivid testimony of that experience.

Throughout her years as a teacher Rann continuously furthered her training in the arts. She took workshops and studied with Walter Greer of Hilton Head, Alex Powers of Myrtle Beach, SC, Pat Lusk of Charleston, SC, Ralph Smith of Annandale, VA, and Gian Cassone of New Mexico. She has featured in eight one-woman shows in South Carolina and is affiliated with the Art League of Hilton Head and the Beaufort Art Association, where she was the Featured Artist in 2002. Her work also garnered the "Award of Excellence" in Beaufort's Annual Spring Art Show in 2004.

Diane Dean

Award winning artist, Diane Dean, creates the original artwork for her tile and glasswork in watercolor, acrylic and mixed media/collage. She uses a combination of printing techniques, plus wet tile saws to create a unique finished work of art in tile. Her materials range from basic ceramic to natural stone, glass and functional objects like cutting boards and coasters.

Raised in a do-it-yourself kind of family, it was only natural that by the age of 11 Dean developed not only a knack for laying tiles, but a keen interest in the medium. As she grew, her artistic talents continued to develop in the form of painting, but it wasn't until recent years that the two passions were pieced together with Dean's desire to see her artwork on tile. She began experimenting with applications and today uses a variety of techniques to showcase her artwork in the form of tile backsplashes, cutting boards and coasters, and framed, hand-cut, original art tiles. Little did Dean realize that her family's tile floor would pave the way for such stylized works of art.

Dean's work will be featured on HGTV's That's Clever in the spring of 2008 and in the Island Packet's "From House to Home" special edition this fall. Her tile work was also featured by two Savannah television stations during the Savannah Home Show.

In the Hilton Head area, Dean is a member of the Hilton Head Art League, South Carolina Watermedia Society, Society of Bluffton Artists, Lowcountry Artists, Pluff Mudd Artists, and Dahlonega Art Association in North Georgia. She has been juried into the Savannah Art's Council's annual "Arts on the River" and the Coastal Discovery Museum's "Arts Market at Honey Horn." Dean is a regular invited artist for the Island School Council's "Evening of the Arts".  Two of her works were selected for exhibit in the Charleston Visitor Center during the 2007 Piccolo Spoleto Festival and another two works have been selected for a special exhibit, Watermedia Showcase at Carolina Gallery, in conjunction with the South Carolina Watermedia Society's 30th Annual Exhibition, taking place in Spartanburg, SC, from Sept. 29 - Nov. 4, 2007.

Recent awards include: Best of Show in the annual Dahlonega Mountain Flower Fine Arts Festival; placing in the People's Choice and an Honorable Mention in the annual SOBA Judged shows. Dean's mixed media painting, Fall Winetime was selected as the artwork for the Coastal Discovery Museum's "Winetime" wine auction to be held in October at Honey Horn.

The Art League of Hilton Head promotes and supports the visual arts through education, exhibitions and partnerships for the cultural enrichment of the community and its visitors. In addition to the gallery in Pineland Station where the artwork of its members is sold, the League holds weeklong workshops at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina where nationally renowned instructors are featured, and art classes in the Art Academy on Cordillo Parkway where classes are taught by local instructors. The Art League has been in existence for more than 30 years.
