Gallery Cornelia in Charleston, SC, Offers Two Exhibitions, Both Part of the MOJA Arts Festival

Gallery Cornelia in Charleston, SC, is hosting two exhibitions for the MOJA Arts Festival including: MOJA Arts Festival Invitational, featuring works by Yvonne P. Carter, on view through Oct. 30, 2007, and an exhibition of works by Pink Earth (Jeanette Ross) from McCormick, SC, on view from Oct. 6 through Nov. 3, 2007.

Pink Earth

Pink Earth, also known as Jeanette Ross, has lived in McCormick County in South Carolina for 17 years. She began painting and making pottery as a child. She graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1984 with a BA in Studio Art and then worked for several years in the field of graphic design.

"I have been an artist from the time I picked up my first crayon and was always encouraged by my Mother who is now a retired school teacher," says Ross. "For awhile I wanted to be a veterinarian or to work with animals in some way. Painting them turned out to be the best way for me. Now my daughter wants to be a veterinarian and I believe she will be one."

"People are always curious about the name Pink Earth that I sign my work with. It certainly catches attention and I guess that is the point. To me it represents my work and also describes my personality which is colorful, yet honest and down to earth," says Ross.

Ross offers the following statement about her work, "Every day I wake up in awe of my blessings and I am truly grateful to God who inspires me to share my gift of expression through art. I am fascinated with creatures, great and small and bringing them to life on canvas with uninhibited color is exciting for me. My passion for the rich, luxurious colors such as those found in Southwestern art is what gives my work its unique quality. I work from photographs that I take myself, but the paintings always end up looking very different from what I start with. It is all about accentuating colors that most people just do not notice. The mediums that I choose to work in most are watercolor for its looseness and warmth and acrylic for its forgiving nature."

The exhibit, MOJA Arts Festival Invitational, features six works by Yvonne Pickering Carter, owner of Gallery Cornelia. Carter returned to Charleston to open her gallery after a career as Art Professor and Department Chairperson at the University of the District of Columbia, an open admission land-grant university.

Gallery Cornelia specializes in nationally recognized African American artists and contemporary women artists.
