Gallery Up in Rock Hill, SC, Features Works by Kevin Morrissey

Gallery Up in Rock Hill, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Hominy, featuring paintings by Kevin Morrissey, on view through Oct. 17, 2008.

Morrissey received both his BFA in Art Education and a MA in Arts Administration from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. He was born and raised in Summerville, SC, where he has taught visual arts at Rollings Middle School for the Arts since 2003. Morrissey envisioned and orchestrated a dynamic, collaborative event that explores the thematic nature of his large scale paintings in combination with the work of his creative friends who attended Winthrop together.

"This is the first time one of our exhibiting artists has thought beyond their own personal work and deliberately included others who are exploring similar themes in their work," explains Gallery Up owner Tamara LaValla. "We have been interested in elevating our gallery shows to multi-disciplinary, creative experiences - events that reflect our community and it's shared values. We are excited about the show that Kevin has helped us put together, it's promising to be a unique mix of nostalgia, social awareness and a celebration of all things Southern."

Drawing from visual references to southern agricultural and industry, Morrissey creates a visual dialogue about growing up in the south and the effect it has on personal identity. "I try to create images of the people and places and ideas that have shaped my perceptions," remarks Morrissey. Works include brightly layered paintings reminiscent of old signage and promotional posters interspersed with figurative stencils.

Gallery Up is an artist run gallery, store and custom frame shop. Our retail and gallery location provide emerging and established artists the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work in a professional manner.
