Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Trey Finney

The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, is offering the exhibit, Trey Finney: New Works, on view fro Oct. 3 - 31, 2008. This is Finney's first show with the gallery.

Finney was born and raised in South Carolina and attended the College of Charleston then transferring to the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL, where he graduated in 1987 with a degree in Illustration. After working as an architectural illustrator, he was hired by Walt Disney Feature Animation and spent the next fifteen years as an animator with the Florida studio in Lake Buena Vista.

While at Disney Feature Animation he contributed to nine animated features and several animated shorts. Some of these credits include Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear. He also received credit on Roller Coaster Rabbit, Off His Rockers and Trail Mix Up.

During his time with Disney Finney was offered many continuing education classes including drawing and painting. In particular, painting inspired a more personal journey, culminating in the decision to leave the animation field and pursue a full time career in fine art. Since then, he has been painting oil on canvas nonstop. His wildlife and landscape paintings convey a style he refers to as "Natural Impressions." They reflect what he has learned about painting and what he sees. An impressionistic style with an emphasis on color and drawing with an underlying abstract design allows for an interpretation, rather than direct imitation of a particular subject.

Finney retired from Disney several years ago to devote his time fully to painting. He feels that an impressionistic style allows him freedom in painting. He is a member of the Society of Animal Artists and the Oil Painters of America. He has been juried into the annual Birds in Art shows hosted by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and hangs in their permanent collection. In December of 1995 he took first place in the wildlife competition with a painting entitled, Deep Creek, Black Bear held by The Artist's Magazine. Other highlights include an "Award of Excellence" presented by the Society of Animal Artists and acceptance in the Arts for the Parks show held in Jackson, Wyoming.

Two stories of the Sylvan Gallery at 171 King Street in Charleston in the heart of the famous antique district displays paintings and sculpture by national artists of note. Trey Finney is a welcome addition to this gallery of highly collected artists.

After many years in the Houston and Santa Fe art markets, Joe and Janie Sylvan bring a freshness and enthusiasm to the eastern art world. They began contributing to the rocketing Charleston art scene the minute they arrived and have helped it grow. Since opening in late 2002, they have shown that diversity is success. The Sylvan Gallery focuses on 20th and 21st century representational art.
