University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Curtis R. Harley

The University Gallery at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, SC, will host an exhibition of paintings by the late Curtis R. Harley from Oct. 2 - 31, 2008. Entitled, A Sense of Place, the collection is of portraits and landscapes from Harley's family, friends and experiences in Spartanburg.

Recognized for painting in oils and watercolor, Harley was a member of the South Carolina Artists Guild, the Greenville Artist Guild, the Southern Watercolor Society, and the National League of American Penwomen. She was also a member and past president of the Artist Guild of Spartanburg. Harley attended Converse College and studied privately with August Cook, artist and former chair of the Converse College art program.

During her career, Harley attended the Art Students League in New York and studied with Alex Powers, well know southeastern watercolorist. She exhibited work in numerous solo exhibitions at such venues as Wofford College, Siebels Bruce Watercolor Exhibition, the Museum of York County, and the Spartanburg County Art Association.

Harley was a proliÞc artist and her works hang in numerous private and corporate collections including the South Carolina Governor's Mansion, the University of South Carolina School of Law, the City of Jeonju in Korea, Union Camp, Converse College and Wofford College. Harley was recognized with numerous awards during her career and had works selected to be included in the following exhibitions: 1979 Springs Mills Traveling Exhibition, the 1984 Atlanta Arts Club Traveling Exhibition and the 1985 Sumter Oil Painters Traveling Exhibition.

"Curtis Harley was a prolific painter who documented many of her life experiences through art," said Jane Nodine, professor of art and director of the Gallery at USC Upstate. "Always striving to improve on previous accomplishments, she continued her research of new and varied technical information throughout her career. Curtis actively participated in competitions and exhibitions throughout the region and she was integral to the support and development of the Spartanburg County Arts Association that is now the Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg."

In honor of Harley's artistic accomplishments, the USC Upstate University Gallery will be renamed the Curtis R. Harley Art Gallery at the University of South Carolina Upstate.
