Wells Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Richard Oversmith and Wendy Whitson

The Wells Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibition of works by new gallery artists, Richard Oversmith and Wendy Whitson, on view from Oct. 3 - 17, 2008.

Wendy Whitson

Asheville, NC, artist Wendy Whitson strives to capture the essence of a landscape with an unusual layering technique of various mediums. She develops each painting with a sculptural approach, building each canvas from a grid system, and incorporating various mediums like sheet music to complete her mixed media surface. She draws her inspiration from various artists including Paul Cezanne and Gustuav Klimt, and began her professional career with a degree in Fine Art from East Carolina University.

Currently working in the River Arts District of Asheville, Whitson has been showing at the Wells Gallery since the grand opening of their new location in Mar. 2008. Her work brings diversity to the collection of paintings showcased at the gallery, and it was her grid system combined with large expressionistic brush strokes that originally caught the interest of gallery owner, Hume Killian.

Richard Oversmith

Originally from the hills of North Carolina, Richard Oversmith's return to his roots has provided him with endless locations for his passion, plein air painting. He works in oil on linen, a medium conducive to his process of the application of layering paint. Although his subjects range from still life to landscapes and figurative studies, each painting evokes a specific mood through the use of color, edges, value and drawing. As a plein air painter, he allows the setting to speak to him, and creates only as many brushstrokes as are needed for the viewer's eyes to understand and connect with the subject.

Oversmith received his degree in Fine Art and Illustration at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, MI, and has derived his style from the lifelong study of past masters, the influence of contemporary painters he admires, and elements that he has personally evolved. He is continuously traveling, and has recently completed workshops in both London and France.

Newly relocated to 125 Meeting Street next to the Gibbes Museum of Art in historic downtown Charleston, the Wells Gallery features fine regional art from a diversity of perspectives in various mediums, including painting and hand-blown glass. The gallery is a member of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association and the French Quarter Gallery Association. An additional gallery is located at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island.
