Carolina Gallery in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Ann Stoddard

Carolina Gallery on Morgan Square in Spartanburg, SC, will present a solo exhibit of works by Ann Stoddard, on view from Oct. 6 through Nov. 16, 2011. A reception will be held on Oct. 6, from 6:30-9pm.

Stoddard’s large, three-dimensional sculptural paintings are manipulated canvases inspired by what she finds in nature. Shapes and colors reflect observations, including insects, butterflies and growth patterns in organic matter. Her smaller pieces resemble specimen collection boxes, referencing the preservation of what exists, while creating something new.

Stoddard is a Spartanburg native, and daughter of Robert L. Stoddard, mayor of Spartanburg from 1962 to 1973. She holds a BFA from the University of South Carolina and MFA in sculpture and printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

About her explorations in art, Stoddard says “There is a common denominator that resurfaces; it is associated with quilts, with cutting, piecing, sections of memory, patterns, collecting, records, chips, visual poems, symbology, a subliminal surreal space, light and dark.”

In the 1980’s, Stoddard’s work was often collaborative/installation based and included performance art, ranging from New York City and Detroit to the List Visual Arts Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the 1990’s, her art was included in group, invitational and solo shows from Los Angeles to the Southeastern US as well as in Europe. Since the turn of the century her work has continued to travel across this country, and as far away as Slovenia, Wales and Beijing, China in galleries, universities and museums.

Stoddard’s work is in permanent public collections including The State Museum, Columbia, SC, The Community Center of Burgstein, Austria, and the Confucius Institute, Guizhou University, Guiyang, China. Her art is held in numerous private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and China.
