Charleston Artist Guild in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Robin Joseph

The Charleston Artist Guild in Charleston, SC, will present Wings of Charleston, a captivating series of bird paintings in oil by prominent hometown artist, Robin Joseph, on view in the CAG Gallery, from Oct. 1 - 31, 2013. A reception will be held on Oct. 4, from 5-8pm.

Joseph is one of Charleston’s premier portrait and travel photographers, as well as an exciting emerging oil painter whose work has been featured in galleries in Charleston and Atlanta, GA. She has studied with Joyce Hall and the late Martin Ahrens for over ten years as well as attended workshops with Laurie Myer.

Growing up with seven siblings and several more first cousins in a close-knit, outdoorsy household within the bucolic landscape of Camden, SC, her inspirations have always drawn from two deep and resonant wells: Nature and Family. With her background in photographic composition coupled with a unique, inspired command of color nuance and brush technique, Joseph’s paintings capture the immediacy of a tender moment between a mother and child, or the exact point at which the intersection of sun, light, and water transforms a simple lakeshore into a heart-stopping memory.

In her show, Wings of Charleston, Joseph found her inspiration in the bird photographs of Brian Koury, mainly the egrets of Little Oak Island on Folly Beach. Her attention to the tiniest detail, although still within an Impressionistic genre, succeeds in evoking feelings of excitement as we can almost feel the rush of air as a bird takes flight, and even a kind of protectiveness for the fragility of their skinny legs and swan-like necks.

As Joseph has observed, “When the light shines through their bodies, you can see their tiny frames surrounded by such abundant feathers. Yet I’m always moved by the way their stance can look either majestic or profoundly awkward. It’s this duality that I’ve explored, hopefully successfully, in this series.”
