Cleveland County Arts Council in Shelby, NC, Features Exhibition of Outsider Art

The Cleveland County Arts Council in Shelby, NC, will present Raw & Fresh: Outsider Art, on view from Oct. 3 – 31, 2013. A reception will be held on Oct. 3, from 5:30-7:30pm. Opening night guest speakers are folk art collectors Barry and Dr. Allen Huffman.

This exhibit features selected works of outsider and folk art from the collections of Barry and Dr. Allen Huffman, the Hickory Museum of Art, Albert Keiser, Jr. and George Clay III and Sandra Pait-Clay. Guest folk artists from Shelby, NC, include Frank Barrow, Vickie Jo Franks and Jesse James Lott.

The Huffmans have been passionate collectors since they began collecting Catawba Valley pottery in 1977. They will share their journey collecting folk art, making friends, points of view, accumulations and letting go. “Contemporary folk art is an art movement that has moved through our country in unique ways. The South has been a rich ground for its emergence, which literally came from the ground up”.

For more than a decade their collection has been widely recognized as one of the best of its kind in the country and they’ve loaned works from it to a number of important exhibitions in larger cities. Now the Huffmans, the Hickory Museum of Art, and Albert Keiser, Jr., have graciously agreed to share selected works from their collections with the Cleveland County Arts Council.

The exhibition includes artwork by Rudolph Valentino Bostic, Charles Burleson, Richard Burnside, Linvel Barker, Miles Burkholder Carpenter , Wanda Clark, James Cook, Burlon Craig, Don Craig, Raymond Coins, Minnie Evans, Howard Finster , Vicki Jo Franks, Keisha Freeman, Melitina Fumero, Pablo Fumero, Victor Joseph Gatto, Albert Hodge, Lonnie Bradley Holley, Addie James, Sara Rakes, Minnie Smith Reinhardt, Charlie Saine, Reverend O. L. Samuels, Lorenzo Scott, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Arie Taylor, Mose Tolliver, Hubert Walters, Allen Wilson.
