January Issue 2004

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Group Exhibition in B & W

Beginning Jan. 5 and running through Jan. 30, 2004, Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, is featuring the works of several artists in a show titled Black & White.

Karen Edgar

Gallery owner and director Ginny Lassiter said, "I love the drama and elegance found in simple black and white pieces. Karen Edgar's Jazzman is breathtaking." The piece to which Lassiter refers is a stunning 40-inch x 30-inch hand-rubbed charcoal and black pastel work on white illustration board by Myrtle Beach, SC, artist Karen Edgar.

Dramatic black & white offerings by photographers are being featured as well. Columbia, SC, photographer Robin Smith has exhibited at the Columbia Museum of Art. Chip Smith of Murrells Inlet, SC, is well known for his Lowcountry writings and photography. Doug Kazantzis' beautifully composed shots of the coast are also in the mix.

Les Powell

The show's three-dimensional pieces include Les Powell's most unusual Horsehair Raku. He places bisque fired pottery in a gas-fired kiln, bringing the temperature up to 1,250 degrees. He then removes the pot and places the long hairs from the tail of a horse on the surface. The hairs immediately start to dance and curl, leaving a permanent, lightening-like pattern on the pot's surface.

Also being featured are the works of Cathy Johnson, Cindy Weaver, Scott Summerfield, Keith White, David McCune, Ann Dowless, Bobby Phillips Thom Kitteridge and Yvonne Hegney.

Sunset River Marketplace showcases more than 150 artists - all from North & South Carolina.
