January Issue 2005

Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association in Charleston, SC, Raises $15,000 for Charleston County School Art Programs

In its sixth year, the Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association's Fine Annual raised $15,000 for Charleston County high schools' fine art programs, and drew an estimated 500 attendees to Charleston, SC.

According to Charleston County School officials, only seven out of the area's 18 high schools have fine art programs. Each of the seven schools will receive $1,700 worth of art supplies - this is eight times more than a Charleston County art teacher's annual budget. According to officials, art teachers only receive $200 per year for art supplies. Members of the association will hand deliver the much-needed supplies to the schools in January 2005.

As part of the association's ongoing mission to support the local arts, this year, a new component to the event was added. At this year's Painting in the Park, the association sponsored its first high school art competition. The winner, Amanda Millard, a senior at St. Johns High School, was presented with the Gibbes Museum of Art's Daniel West Fraser Memorial Scholarship. Second and third place winners, Meredith Eades of the School of the Arts and Trisha McDowell of Wando High School, received gift certificates for art supplies, courtesy Artist & Craftsman Supply. The paintings, provided by area high schools, were judged by a panel of celebrity judges-Dr. Elwood Lewis, Associate Superintendent of Charleston County Schools, City of Charleston Council Member Yvonne Evans, Elizabeth Fleming, Executive Director of the Gibbes Museum of Art and Barbara Tapp, Editor-in-Chief of Art &Antiques Magazine.

The Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association was founded in 1999. The association consists of 10 galleries, which are dedicated to developing Charleston into a fine arts destination, and bringing the best of the city's visual art scene to the national forefront. The Seventh Fine Art Annual will be Nov. 4-6, 2005.

This year's event was sponsored by Charleston Magazine, Art & Antiques, Artists & Galleries of the South, Normandy Artisan Bakers, LTD, Charleston Place, Gibbes Museum of Art, Artist & Craftsman Supply, The Mills House and Maverick Southern Kitchens. Special thanks to Council Member Yvonne Evans, Associate Superintendent, Dr. Elwood Lewis, Betsy Fleming of the Gibbes Museum of Art and Barbara Tapp, Editor-in-Chief of Art & Antiques.
