Watercolor Workshop and Fundraiser with Mary Whyte in Charleston, SC

Students will have the opportunity to unravel the mysteries of watercolor with Mary Whyte during a workshop on Jan. 29, 2005, from 9am-4pm, in historic Charleston, SC. The class fee of $100 is a donation to the Hebron Zion Church of Johns Island, SC, where Whyte finds many of her models. Both the models and Whyte will donate their time for the class. Coleman Fine Art will sponsor the class that will take place in the Fellowship Hall of the St. Johannes Lutheran Church, 48 Hasell Street in downtown Charleston. Class size is limited.

With Whyte's expert guidance students will explore basic portrait painting techniques, discover how to design strong compositions, and how to mix clean, clear colors. Through a series of demonstrations and hands on lessons, students will become more confident with their watercolor abilities and be on the way to making more dynamic paintings. The artist's inspirational and informative teaching style will make beginners feel comfortable yet challenge advanced students.

Whyte is most recognized for her watercolor portraits and her Lowcountry Series, a moving collection of watercolors that depict the rich heritage and culture of the Gullah people of Johns Island. Her work is exhibited in over two hundred corporate, university, museum, and private collections. Whyte has been teaching for over twenty years and is the illustrator of more than a dozen children's books. She has written several feature articles for American Artist and Watercolor magazines. She is also the author of the popular instructional book, Watercolor for the Serious Beginner, published by Watson-Guptill and now in its fourth printing, and her newly released book, Alfreda's World (Wyrick & Co.), about her friendships that have developed as a result of painting the women of Johns Island.
