Art Asylum Gallery in Bluffton, SC, Offers Works by James E. St.Clair

Chicken of the Sea

On Jan 6, 2006, Lowcountry artist James E. St.Clair (aka The Artist Saint) will unveil his newest series of paintings. The exhibit entitled, Hatching The Chickens, will feature the further misadventures of his popular chicken characters which have been evolving over the past few years. The exhibit will be held at the new Art Asylum Gallery in Bluffton, SC.

The series, The Misadventures of The Chickens, was started several years ago after a rare Lowcountry ice storm. The artist's mother reflected on a childhood memory of a similar storm when her uncle tried to feed the chickens. Her tale of them slipping and sliding across the ice, trying to get the corn inspired the first Chicken painting, Chickens on Ice.

Due to the success of several of these paintings and their growing popularity and almost universal appeal, St.Clair has been inspired to create a collection of over twenty five of these hilarious paintings. According to the artist, "during these times of war, natural disasters, and general turmoil in the world, what better time to find something to laugh about? The Chickens are strictly for laughs."

St.Clair's work is funded through a grant from the Arts Council of Beaufort County with funds from the City of Beaufort and the SC Arts Commission through the NEA. Additional funding is from the John & Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of SC. It is also co-sponsored by Old Bluffton Flowers, Antiques, Etc.
