City of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Leigh Ann Davis

The City of Charleston's City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibition, An Uneven Part of the Whole, featuring works of oil on canvas and board, by Leigh Ann Davis, from Jan. 5 through Feb. 3, 2006.

Davis, a native of Clemson, SC, studied art history in Genoa, Italy, and graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA in Painting in 2003. After graduation, Davis moved to Philadelphia, PA. Her work was well received in Philadelphia. In the summer of 2005, she moved to Charleston, to concentrate on building a new body of work and to found a local chapter of the New York based non-profit organization, Women's Caucus for Art. This exhibit will be her first exhibition in Charleston.

Davis comments on her work: "The genesis of my work is developed through a modus operandi; where inspiration meets operation, and methodologies are formed, by creating what I interpret as the abstract from the understood. As Paul Klee once said, 'Art does not reproduce the visible, rather makes visible'. These methodologies reconstitute a web of motivation and interpretation into functions producing both the physicality of painting as well as the independent manifestations. Each art form is fashioned both individually as well as a unit, in an alphabet-like language of fundamental symbols and elements, redefining their role in each environment. In exploring these transitory emotions of inadequacy and safety which associate themselves with self-control, this body of work procreates many parallel images through a ceremonial reverberation of space, color, transparency, placement and ownership."

The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre, established by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in 1978, is located in the historic Dock Street Theatre. The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre's mission is to exhibit the work of visual artists from the tri-county area, especially those engaged in serious contemporary and experimental work.

Annual selections for the City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre exhibits are made in November each year. Artists interested in applying to the 2007 City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre should contact the Office of Cultural Affairs no later than Oct. 31, 2006.
