Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Luiz Galvao

The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg is presenting the exhibit, Arts with Pencils, featuring works by Luiz Galvao at the Guild Gallery located in the Spartanburg Arts Center in Spartanburg, SC, from Jan 3 - 30, 2006.

Galvao, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who relocated to the United States in 1967, is a self-taught artist who has devoted himself entirely to his painting since retiring from his job as a design engineer and technical illustrator in 1995.

"Since I didn't have any formal training in the arts, it took some time to discover how to express myself artistically," Galvao says of how he developed a realistic style in sketching with colored pencils, graphite, pastels and charcoal that he felt "accurately portrayed the beauty and fascination of my artistic renderings." He later began to experiment with pastels, oils and colored pencils, and, as he says, "with each media added new dimensions of color and composition to my artistic endeavors."

Recently Galvao has begun working in stained glass and wood carving, enhancing the dimensionality of his work. Computers have also opened up another method of generating art that he says is "unique and exciting to me."

Galvao is a member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and the Artists' Guild of Spartanburg. His work has been shown throughout the Southwest, where he lived before relocating to Greer, SC, to be closer to his children.
