The North End Gallery in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Fleta Monaghan

The North End Gallery in Asheville, NC, is presenting feature an exhibit of oil and mixed media works by Fleta Monaghan, on view through Jan. 31, 2007.

Monaghan grew up on the west coast of Florida, settling in Asheville in 1981. The artist has been intrigued with combining materials in a meaningful way to express a visual map of personal travel and her observations of earth change. Passage of time, and what that means to the human experience is a theme that has always intrigued Monaghan.

The artist explains, "I have painted the faces of artists, friends and family in a historical context to create a visual link between the past and present. Uncovering layers of meaning in stories passed down about the lives of Saints, mythological beings and historical figures puts the concept of passage of time in a new context. I love to paint people I know, experiment with mixed media in my paintings and push the image toward abstraction. I am always seeking an essence of thought and feeling when I combine imagery with materials. There is an unbroken thread that weaves through all my work, no matter want materials I use or which techniques I employ. The Gulf of Mexico strongly influenced my visual, spiritual and philosophical senses as have the Mountains here in North Carolina."
