Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, Opens New Exhibits for 2007

The Upstairs Artspace, in Tryon, NC, launches its 29th season of showcasing contemporary art with two absorbing exhibitions, Group 07 and From Here: Local Color in Black & White by Blair Martin, which open on New Year's Eve and continue through Feb. 24, 2007.

Group 07 is an invitational, "no theme" venue for 16 artists working in a variety of mediums. Most have enjoyed long and
distinguished careers; others are emerging but have already been favorably noticed by the art world.

From South Carolina are Andrew Blanchard, printmaking, Ralph Paquin, drawing, Ann Stoddard, painting, (Spartanburg); Mana D. C. Hewitt, metal assemblages, Laura Spong, painting, (Columbia); Paula Smith, ceramic sculpture, (Rock Hill); and Paul Yanko, painting, (Greenville). North Carolina artists are Celia Gray, mixed media sculpture, Dustin Spagnola, painting, Kathryn Temple, painting, (Asheville); Hanna Jubran, mixed media sculpture, (Grimesland); and Kathryn Rileigh, painting, (Brevard). Other artists included are Edward Evans, painting, (Stroudsburg, PA); Gay Groomes, collage, (Pasadena, CA); Fern Samuels, collage, (Palm Beach Garden, FL); and Scott Upton, painting, (Cummings, GA).

"These artists bring an exciting sampling of sophisticated work to the community," says Dale McEntire, chair of the Exhibits Committee. All but three of the artists are exhibiting at the Upstairs for the first time.

From Here is a series of extraordinary portraits of local personalities executed by Tryon artist Blair Martin. Painted primarily in black and white with striking touches of color, the images convey the collective humor, energy, kindness and quirkiness of small town folks.

A "Walk & Talk" tour of the art will be conducted by artists on Jan. 7, 2007, at 2pm.
