Sculpture in the South Adds New Sculpture to Summerville, SC, Landscape

Art that invites touching. In Summerville, SC's parks, of course. At Town Hall, surely. Next to the baseball diamond, wow! From wildlife to engaging figures, Summerville has a piece of public sculpture that will warm your heart and stir your imagination. Most of the sculpture can be found on a casual stroll along the paved pathways and landscaped beds of beautiful Azalea Park. Since 1999, seventeen pieces of permanent sculpture have been installed, all designed to invite "up close and personal" contact. Everyone can enjoy fine art that is both inspiring and accessible, 365 days a year at no charge.

The nonprofit arts group, Sculpture in the South, is the catalyst bringing public sculpture to this quirky Southern town. Antonio, by Colorado artist Wayne Salge, has been selected to become Summerville's eighteenth piece of public sculpture.

Antonio, an 8-1/2' bronze, is a contemporary interpretation of the human form with arms upraised. The figure is reaching out beyond itself, either in relationship to others around it or in sheer exultation. Antonio communicates strength and optimism, and speaks to every age, gender, ethnic group and language. Permanent installation will take place early in 2008 on the grounds of the Jerry Blackwell Sports Complex at Gahagan, where 35,000-plus visitors a year come to Summerville to attend softball tournaments. The location was selected and approved by Summerville Town Council in Sept. 2006.

All of Summerville's permanent public sculpture is funded by individual and corporate donations (no public money is used). Each piece of sculpture is selected only from artists who have participated in one or more of the annual Sculpture in the South Exhibit and Sale events. Once a sculpture is purchased and installed, it is then donated to the people of the Town of Summerville. Summerville Parks and Recreation Director Mike Hinson and his crew have engineered the installations of all of the public sculpture purchases, using their expertise in placing sculpture in natural settings that both enhances the landscape and presents the artwork to its best advantage.

The 10th Annual Sculpture in the South Exhibit and Sale is an up-scale, hands-on experience for the whole family - too good to miss! It will take place on May 17-18, 2008, in Azalea Park in Summerville.

Sculpture in the South promotes sculpture through education and through the creation of a permanent sculpture collection that enhances Summerville's public areas.
