Janaury Issue 2008

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Offers Group Exhibit

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, is featuring an unusual group show entitled Silver Reflections: A Multimedia Exhibition, on view from Jan. 19 through Mar. 1, 2008.

The eclectic show includes hand-blown glass, clay art, metalworks, watercolor paintings on aluminum, leaded glassworks, oil paintings, woodworks and more. Exhibitors include some of the gallery's most sought-after artists.

Renowned glass artist Scott Summerfield is showing a number of his abstract "cherries" with encased silver leaf, which provides visual texture to the sleekly elegant pieces. Stunning horsehair raku pottery with a sterling silver overlay lip is by award-winning clay artist Les Powell.

Gallery owner Ginny Lassiter said, "We have such a range of talented North and South Carolina artists here at Sunset River, I wanted to showcase them in a different kind of exhibition. You'll see fine art, folk art, artisan made jewelry and some architectural pieces that all come together under the theme of Silver Reflections."

In the folk art category are Todd Carrignan's shadow boxes of razor blade art and Fran Bridges series of "flounders" created from cast-off pieces of corrugated steel and other metals.

Clay artist Yvonne Hegney, whose pieces are now in museums, corporate collections and private homes all over the world, also incorporates found metal into her organic pottery and sculptures. Bobby Phillips, known for his large turned wood vessels inlaid with sterling, turquoise and other materials, contributes a large wood wall plaque with a pewter center for the show.

Other artists include Larry Babb, wall sculpture and tables; Lee Spivey, sterling silver jewelry; Cheri Dowd, sterling silver jewelry; Marcy Reid, mirror; Nancy Hughes Miller, oil paintings; and Janet Isenhour, watercolor on aluminum.

Also on view at the gallery through Jan. 12, 2008, is the exhibit, Watercolor: Bright & Bold, a collection of large floral paintings by NC artist Linda Griffin.

Sunset River Marketplace is the area's largest art gallery and features full-service custom framing, pottery classes, ongoing art classes and one-day workshops (nationally known artists offer three- and five-day workshops at its workshop division, Sunset River Studio, located about a mile from the gallery).
