Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Linda Hudgins

The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg is presenting the exhibit, Contemporary Cave Paintings, featuring works by Linda Hudgins, on view at the Guild Gallery, located at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC. The exhibition will be on view through Jan. 29, 2009.

Hudgins' works are large, colorful abstracts created using oil and acrylic paints and pastel drawings done as copies of segments of her own paintings. The artist describes the subject matter as "totally nonobjective abstractions" using brilliant colors and lively shapes and spaces.

Hudgins likens her studio in Tryon, NC, where she does her work to a primeval cave, a space that recreates the aura of exploration of the unconscious and joy of discovery that she envisions even the earliest cave painters felt. "Caves are indeed places of storytelling and places for hidden treasure," the artist says, alluding to both Jungian philosophy and ancient Greek mythology to support her feeling that her studio is a "cave" in which she can explore her unconscious.

"I too tell stories and find hidden treasures. I too encounter ignorance and witness the birth of deities. It's a domain of being so personal it can never be fathomed by consciousness. Art is its only language, as cave painters have always known," says Hudgins.

Hudgins was born in Converse, SC, and earned a bachelor's degree at Converse College and a master's at Rhode Island School of Design. She pursued a broad range of studies not only in the United States but in such different locales as Guilin, China, where she studied Chinese decorative style painting under an instructor. Over a period of several years, she has studied pottery, beadwork, printmaking and weaving in Francistown, Botswana. Most recently the well-traveled artist studied batik techniques in Ghana, West Africa.

An art educator as well as an artist, early in her career Hudgins taught at Spartanburg Day School as well as Woodruff and Jenkins junior high schools. She has also taught for three years in Botswana and four years in Guilin and Shenzhen in China.
