Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Host Works by Beverly Buchanan & Tony Griffin

In the second exhibition of its twentieth season, Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, presents the work of painter and sculptor, Beverly Buchanan, and painter Tony Griffin. The exhibition will be on view from Nov. 3 through Dec. 30, 2000.

Beverly Buchanan

Beverly Buchanan's new body of drawings and paintings on paper return to the favored shack vernacular and reveal her fresh approach to this familiar subject. Buchanan's color is vibrant and inviting; her application of the oil pastel has energy and verve. In this group of work, Buchanan varies her scale working from smaller canvases or works on paper to large, layered works pieces.

The city of Atlanta honored the artist proclaiming Mar. 17,2000 as "Beverly Buchanan Day." Atlanta mayor, Bill Campbell states, "whereas, through her work, Beverly Buchanan compels us to ponder the place of shacks in our social and economic culture; and whereas, we commend Beverly Buchanan for using her artistry to bring what is often overlooked into the limelight."

Tony Griffin

Hodges Taylor is pleased to welcome Tony Griffin to the gallery in his first solo show. Griffin received his training in Florence, Italy and at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art in Pennsylvania. The artist has used this training to explore landscape, still life and interior subject matter. Like Buchanan, Griffin is attracted to architectural types, both familiar and worn.

Known for his intimately scaled, realistic paintings, Griffin has taken this opportunity to work on a larger scale for this show. The artist has always worked in response to the world around him but the scale change his enabled him to work more directly and loosely. The forms within the paintings have become more monumental.
