Spartanburg County Museum of Art Post results of Annual Sidewalk Show

The Spartanburg County Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC, is pleased to announce that the 34th Annual Sidewalk Art Show held on Sept. 9, 2000, at Converse College was a great success. Wonderful weather combined with art activities, music, and food helped make this a special family-friendly event. The Best in Show Award, a $2,000 prize, went to David Benson for his mixed media work entitled The Sin Eater. Benson teaches art at Dorman High School in Spartanburg. Ann Wenz won the $1,000 Textile Award for her work in fabric titled The Mill. Wenz is Professor of Art at Spartanburg Methodist College. The Student Best of Show Award went to Chellis Stoddard for her drawing, Rembrandt's Brother. Stoddart is a senior at Spartanburg High School.

Those winning first place prizes of $300 each in the Professional Category were Claire Miller Hopkins, Winston Wingo, Jill Jones, Mark Olencki, Kristin Malone, David Zacharias, and Ainai Vang. The first place Amateur prizes of $150 each were awarded to Jared Harris, Jim Woodruff, Laura Hagan, Jennifer Caddell, and Manuel Savvaki. Students winning first place awards were: High School: Chellis Stoddard (two awards), Laura Hoop, Sheena Wykel, Lovett Hodge, and Jonathan Putman. Junior High School: Vanessa Zijlstre, Sierra Happis, Tommy Rice, Justin Joyner (two awards), and Tina Mathis. Elementary School: Joshua Yonkoske, Sasha Allen, Wesston Olencki, Phillip & Patrick Estep, McGhee Mann, and Amanda Dang.

The Museum of Art would like to thank all of the artists, performers, and volunteers for participating in this community event. We would also like to thank McNeill-Patterson Insurance for sponsoring the childrens' art activities which included a sidewalk chalk contest, 20 minute pastel drawing sessions with local artists, face painting, and hat making. This event was also sponsored by the County of Spartanburg and The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg. Congratulations to all of the artists who entered and the 60 award winners.
