BAA Gallery in Beaufort, SC, Features SCWS Winners' Show

Award winning paintings from the prestigious 2002 South Carolina Watercolor Society Members' Exhibition will be featured in a special exhibit at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery in Beaufort, SC, from Nov. 4 - 30, 2002.

The award-winning paintings number 30 and include four works by prominent local artists plus the winner of the Beaufort Art Association award. This is the 25th annual SCWS exhibit. It started in Columbia, SC, and Beaufort is the second stop in a nine-city tour, and the only stop in Beaufort County. The winners were judged best of a juried, invitational SCWS competition, and most of the paintings are for sale.

A top award went to Tom Ratliffe of Hilton Head Island, SC, for a charming portrait of An Artist, a beaming Sunday artist with her landscapes and seascapes hanging on the wall behind her. Ratliffe, a WWII Marine pilot, was a commercial artist in New York City for 40 years.

Lynn Parrott of Bluffton, SC, won an award for Sunday Crossword, a watercolor sketch started during a BAA workshop and a prize-winner in the BAA Spring Show last March.

Another highly-awarded winner is Robert Highsmith of Hilton Head Island, who also was honored at the BAA Spring Show. His landscape, Low Tide Reflections, was a top-place winner. It is a peaceful marsh scene superbly presented. A member of the American Watercolor Society (artists must qualify for membership), Highsmith has won more than 100 awards for his paintings.

The BAA award went to JoAnne Anderson of Belton, SC, for Eric, a portrait of a water-man. Other winners included Vickie Jourdan of Hilton Head Island, several artists from the Charleston, SC, area and others from all over the state.

Simultaneously with the SCWS Winners' Show, the BAA Gallery will feature an all-new selection of paintings by member artists. The gallery offers original works of art, photographs, jewelry, ceramics and woodwork, plus prints and cards, all the work of more than 75 local artists. All artwork is changed every six weeks.
