City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Susan Colwell

The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of oil on canvas by Awendaw, SC, artist Susan Colwell, Nov. 4 through Dec. 3, 2002, entitled Revisited.

Colwell was born Nov. 30, 1945 at Camp LeJeaune, NC, and grew up primarily in Toledo, OH. As a young girl she studied at the Toledo Museum of Art and as a teenager she had her first solo exhibit, due to her very assertive mother. Colwell earned her BFA in Painting at Miami University, Oxford, OH, in 1967. She has had two solo exhibits at Brazier Fine Art in Richmond, VA; one solo exhibit at the Red Door Art Gallery in Anderson, SC; and two two-women exhibits at Moonshell Gallery in Hilton Head, SC. She is also a three times award winner at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival Outdoor Show held in Charleston.

Colwell comments on her work: "This has been an incredibly difficult year for me. My husband, who was my best friend, died in December of last year. For several months I was immobilized. Finally, I began painting and for awhile I did not feel anything; however, the painting process gradually energized me. Now, I try to recreate the feeling and mood of a place I've visited. Many of my paintings are directly out of my backyard - my studio overlooks the Wando River. I respond to the ever-changing light and atmosphere. I am moved by the subtleties of the light and the softness I see and feel in the landscape. I find that painting the familiar is cathartic. I try to recapture my feelings about a place by using color and form, creating an atmosphere of reflection. Painting gives me strength and this year it has saved me."
