Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Antonio de la Vega

For 40 years, Antonio de la Vega was a well-known name in the world of New York art and also a corporate favorite for his commercial agency work. A former vice-president of the Artists Guild of New York, de la Vega has had his work represented in museums, fine galleries and many private collections. He also traveled the world, painting in France, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Mexico where he gained international acceptance. Then, a decade ago he relocated to Jacksonville, NC, to be near his family. Except for some minor exhibitions he dropped out of sight.

It is never too late to come back. And so, Antonio de la Vega will have his first major exhibit since moving south at the largest gallery in Coastal Carolina, at the Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, on view through Nov. 8, 2002.

Earlier this summer, de la Vega contacted prominent Sneads Ferry, NC, artist Sherry Thurston and told her of his interest to resume exhibiting and she visited his Jacksonville home and studio. "I was totally impressed by the quality of his work and the range of his talent," said Thurston. "We should be honored to have an artist of his stature and reputation in our area."

Sunset River Marketplace is delighted to host this show in de la Vega's honor. A native of El Paso, TX, and product of a Hispanic background, de la Vega began studying art in New York after returning from a stint abroad with the 82nd Airborne in World War II where he won a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his valor in the Battle of Bastogne.

De la Vega has exhibited in the Newark Museum of Fine Arts, the Bronx Museum of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Hall Gallery, the Rockland, NY, Art Museum, and many galleries in Europe and Latin America. He is a painter trained in classical traditions, known for his expansive landscapes, figure studies, studies of celebrities, religious works and nudes - with a strong Latin emphasis. Many of his paintings are of women, including those who have made a major impact on his life. Some of his works are representational of the popular culture he helped promote through his corporate advertising career. Some of his high profile clients have included Boeing, Ford, IBM, RCA and Westinghouse.

De la Vega did some of the original drawings for the Stealth Bomber. Today, he still paints on a daily basis and spends time with his family. In recent months he has re-opened his private collection, making a limited number of sales to local clients. At the Sunset River Marketplace, about 20 de la Vega works will be on display, most of them available for sale to the general public.

Sunset River Marketplace will show a representative selection of de la Vega's works on a continuing basis after the close of the show.
