November Issue 2004

The Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, Features New Works by Ray Ellis

On Nov. 13, 2004, The Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC will open an exhibition of paintings by Ray Ellis, who in March of this year, was awarded the Medal of Honor by the Salmagundi Club for his lifetime accomplishments as a painter. The Salmagundi Club, organized in 1871 in New York, is one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious arts organizations.

Impressionist images of southern Lowcountry landscapes, seascapes, and coastal New England are the subjects for which Ellis is best known. The show entitled, Oil & Water New Paintings by Ray Ellis, will feature 16 new works, both oils and watercolors, by the 83-year-old painter.

Ellis started painting as a boy and went on to attend the famed Philadelphia Museum School of Art. His first one-man show was held at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1947. In the 1980's, Ellis and Walter Cronkite collaborated on a series of coffee table books; South by Southeast, North by Northeast, and Westwind, spreading recognition of Ellis's work across the United States.

Though a native of Philadelphia, Ellis is often "claimed" by the South, where he lived for a number of years near Hilton Head, SC, and then later in Savannah, GA. He is proud of his Mother's family ties to Georgetown, SC, where her family once owned Windsor Plantation on the Black River.

The Cheryl Newby Gallery is located in nearby Pawleys Island, SC, and has represented Ray Ellis since 1987. There are only two other galleries that represent Ellis and show his original paintings; one in Savannah, GA, and another in Marthas Vineyard, MA, where he lives and maintains a studio.

Ellis has received much acclaim this year through a major retrospective exhibition of his life's work that was organized by the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah. Ray Ellis in Retrospect, A Painter's Journey, included 83 paintings and a 166-page catalog of the show. After the Telfair, the show traveled to the Butler Museum in Youngstown, OH, and then to the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA.

The exhibit of new works by Ellis will be on view at The Cheryl Newby Gallery through Dec. 17, 2004.
