November Issue 2005

Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, Features Annual Equine Show

The Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, will present the Fifth Annual Equine Show which opens on Nov. 5 and continues through Dec. 23, 2005. All of the artists included in this year's show speak about their close connections with the horse.

Award winning artist Joan McIntyre paints with acrylics and oils and is well known in the region for putting her viewer at the scene. She sees every horse as an individual personality, depicting a narrative moment in time. Her diversity is evident in the range of subject matter from portraits to foxhunting, jumpers, and steeplechase scenes. McIntyre's images have been featured in many national publications and her work is in the collections of George Getty III, Telly Sevalas, and many other European and National racing enthusiasts.

Nancy Pellatt's realistic renderings of horses and hounds in watercolor or oil are well known throughout the country. Her outstanding work has appeared on the cover of the Trakenhener Magazine as well as an impressive six times on the cover of The Chronicle of the Horse. She is an Associate Member, and Member of the Board of the American Academy of Equine Art. Her paintings have hung in the National Arts Club in New York and the International Museum of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park. Pellatt's work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Hounds and Hunting at Morven Park in Leesburg, VA.

Kristin Schmitt draws and paints the horse in a variety of media and styles, always conveying her love for her subject. She has been a part time student for the last two years at FALA, an atelier school for classical painting and drawing, which, according to Schmitt helps transport her art to a deeper level. In her own words, this new training allows her "to surrender to the beauty and allow it to come through". Schmitt feels deeply that the horse is like a sacred image, connecting heaven with earth.

Jill Silver has delighted clients from all over the Carolinas, and now the UK as well, with her pencil and colored pencil commissioned portraits of dogs and horses. She also works in pastel and acrylics, bringing a great love and understanding for her subjects to her work. For five years running she has created a new drawing for the Tryon Hounds Horse Show. All proceeds from the sale of tee shirts and a raffle for the original work of art go to the Foxhound Relocation and Retirement program. Silver was recently accepted into the Contemporary American Dog Art Competition in New York City.

Jeffrey Foster Thomas creates portraits in a variety of unusual media, including diamond etching on granite and marble. Thomas has recently developed a brand new technique he calls Neo-Fresco where he applies graphite to plaster that he subsequently stains with washes of color to help him capture the soul of his subject. His passion for the beauty, mass and movement in the horse is emphatically captured in his new body of work.
