The Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, Features Works by Maud Gatewood

The Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, is presenting the exhibition, From Memory: Maud Gatewood, on view through Apr. 16, 2006, in the Samuel Hudson Hughes Wing. From Memory is a comprehensive overview collection with twenty-four works created by Gatewood from 1960-2003 illustrating how she skillfully moved from figures to landscape to express isolation, loss and hope.

Maud Gatewood (Am., 1934-2004) is considered one of the most noteworthy artists to emerge from the American South. Born in Yanceyville, NC, her small town upbringing and strong ties to the south left her with numerous memories to draw upon when painting "I think you get a stronger, more simple statement with memory because then the extraneous things are left out. It distills what is essential."  A prolific artist Gatewood left a legacy of hundreds of paintings, sketches, prints and painted constructions in wood.

A solitary personality and a keen observer, one of Gatewood's greatest talents was her ability to stand outside of an event and see what others could not then through her art capture and depict the human condition. Her work stops the viewer in time and compels one to take time to really see and reflect on what was going on in the work, whether examining guests at a party or the changes in the land after a fire - death and rebirth. Gatewood's art work reflects the characters, politics and nature of the south, depicting and revealing everyday scenes with everyday people.  Although known for being tough and demanding on herself as an artist and on her students as a teacher, in her work warmth and caring is evident in her treatment of people and land.

From Memory: Maud Gatewood includes the revealing documentary Facing the White Canvas by David Kasper and Carlyle Poteat on view in the exhibition. The accompanying exhibition catalogue shares memories of the artist by longtime friends, traveling companions and colleagues. The museum wishes to thank John and Andrea Hastings, Dorothy D. Hodges, Christopher Maxey and Thomas S. Kenan III for sponsorship of the exhibition and to the many lenders to the exhibition.

Gatewood's work has been shown in numerous exhibitions including 13 North Carolina Artist Annuals, North Carolina Museum of Art, and exhibits at the Green Hill Center for NC Art, Greensboro, NC, and Painting in the South at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She was one of nine artists who participated in North Carolina Women Artists, National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC. Gatewood received a BA in Art from UNC-Greensboro and an MA in Painting from Ohio State University.
