November Issue 2006

Fountainside Gallery in Wilmington, NC, Features Works by Sandy Nelson

A new exhibit of small oil paintings entitled, Summer Memories, by Sandy Nelson opens on Nov. 22 at Fountainside Gallery in Wilmington, NC. The exhibit continues through Dec. 7, 2006. The artwork was created over the summer as the artist visited area beaches, creek marshes and attractions such as Airlie Gardens and Orton Plantation. Nelson is especially known for her landscapes and paintings of children playing on the beach, as well as her commission portraiture.

A native of Kentucky, Nelson graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Fine Art and has since studied with some of the top names in landscape and figure painting in the country. Her portrait work has included the heads of colleges, federal judges, a senator and other government officials. Two harness racing pieces are in the collection of George Steinbrenner, owner of the NY Yankees and two are in the collection of Sam Walton, founder of Walmart; others have found their way to over 60 corporate and museum collections. She was named one of the top 200 artists in 1993 by Artists Magazine and has been profiled in The Rotarian, an international publication. After living in Tucson, AZ, and studying landscape painting, she moved to the Outer Banks and recently to Wilmington where she maintains a studio.

When asked to describe what inspires her work, Nelson said, "My influences are as diverse as the great Russian and Spanish impressionists to a childhood amid the dark hills of eastern Kentucky. In the latter I found a sincere appreciation for the beauty of the world, in the former, inspiration to express it. My work is not edgy, nor avant-garde; it doesn't follow fads or trends - it is simply truth as I perceive it. That is what I hope the viewer takes away with them. It is truly a gift to be an artist."
