Wilkes Art Gallery in N. Wilkesboro, NC, Features Works by Dan Smith

The Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, is pleased to announce a one-person exhibition, Colored by Nature, featuring large format, boldly painted oils on canvas by Dan Smith. This exhibition, composed of work created during the past two years, will run from Nov. 17 through Jan. 6, 2007.

Smith's art has been featured in over 100 exhibitions throughout the country including the prestigious National Academy Museum in New York City, the DC Art Center in Washington, DC, the Taos Art Museum in Taos, New Mexico, The Academy of Art in San Francisco, California and the South Carolina State Museum, in Columbia, SC. In Apr. 2007, as part of the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown, VA, Smith's one-person exhibition InCarNation: The Hampton Roads 400 - A Reinterpretation of John Smith, will open at the Charles H. Taylor Center in Hampton, VA.

Smith is a graduate of BFA and MFA studio art programs at East Carolina University and the University of South Carolina's, respectively. Before moving to Hickory, NC, in Dec. 2003, he spent over 15 years teaching studio art and humanities at colleges in South Carolina and Virginia, including Claflin College in Orangeburg, SC; Hampton University, in Hampton, VA; and Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, VA.

During the past two years, Smith has concentrated solely on making art, creating several bodies of work including his abstracted oil paintings inspired by North Carolina's landscape. "This body of work is my way of celebrating North Carolina's natural beauty, with its vibrant colors of the seasons," explains the artist. "I've painted at least one monumental work a month - large abstracted canvases incorporating the changes in nature where I live in the woods, by a stream and a lake, and close to the mountains."

The Wilkes Art Gallery is a non-profit visual arts center dedicated to providing quality art experiences through exhibits, workshops, classes and field trips for all ages. The Gallery promotes art as a necessary and enriching component of a well-rounded life.
