Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Vicki Gates

Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, is pleased to feature an exhibit by Vicki Gates, on view through Nov. 30, 2007. In her new exhibit, The Local Scene, Gates shows the viewer the beauty she sees in the local landscape.

After moving to Charleston 36 years ago Gates immediately fell in the love with the marshes and beaches. She finds there is a constant change of light over the land whether it is from sunrise to sunset or from season to season. The marshes and dunes are reinvented right before your eyes every moment of every day.

Gates feels you can see the same landscape time and time again but there is that one moment when you pass by, the light is incredibly perfect; the colors are beautifully intense or misty and soft. You see this same old landscape with new eyes. This is the moment she waits for. It sometimes takes searching for but, at other times, the inspiration just appears before your eyes and you thank your lucky stars for being in the right place at the right time. "Today everyone lives such busy lives, we miss the beauty in everyday things. When people view my work I want them to see something they may have seen a hundred times before but now see it in a new way," says Gates.

Gates paints both in pastels and watercolors. The Local Scene is predominantly pastel landscapes. Also included is a new subject matter for her, storefronts. These pastel paintings capture the transparent and reflective nature of glass storefronts, seeing inside and outside of the store at the same time. They are an extension of the shadows and reflections she is known for in her still life.

Gates is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of American and a member of the SC Watercolor Society. She was also been accepted into the National Exhibition of the Pastel Society of American in New York City twice in the last three years. Her work has twice been selected as "some of the best in the nation" by Pastel Journal.
