Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Frank Hobbs

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present an exhibition of new paintings by Frank Hobbs, on view from Nov. 7 through Jan. 3, 2009.

Hobbs comments on landscape painting and place as it is explored in his work: "Landscape painting can never quite be a 'pure', art-for-art's sake, art. Landscapes are always somehow, implicitly or overtly, about place. The first question anyone asks of a landscape painting is, where? Place is important to me as a painter. The specificity of any subject is the thing that is most exciting and challenging - the lay of the land, the atmosphere, the light, the visual surprises that come from the search for essence."

"The past two years have brought many changes of place that have found their way into my work: a year in central Maine as visiting artist at Colby College; moving to Ohio to take a full-time teaching position at Ohio Wesleyan University; and most recently, a summer spent painting in eastern Tuscany in Italy," adds Hobbs. "Wherever I find myself, I paint. The process of looking, responding, and manipulating paint on a surface, is, for me, a means for being more alive in the present moment, a way of honoring the sturdy grace of the world and my passage through it."
