Smith Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Jennifer Smith Rogers

Smith Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Streets and Structures, featuring new works by Jennifer Smith Rogers, on view from Nov. 7 - 21, 2008.

With this exhibition Rogers focuses her attention on the architecture and avenues of Charleston. Whether it is facades of historical buildings and churches, storefront windows, wandering alleyways, or rooftop views, the artist recreates with bold brushstrokes of strong color an intimate perception of her native town.

What strikes the viewer of Rogers' paintings is her dramatic use of light and shadow through the use of transitioning color. Her paintings often reveal an impressionist sense of a fleeting moment - the light caught at the perfect time of day before it fades. This is especially true in one of the paintings to be featured in the show, Between Two Steeples, which captures a view looking out over Charleston rooftops and encompassing what lies between the spires of St. Michael's and St. Philip's. The eye is immediately drawn to the breathtaking sky and the use of a wide palette of color - grays, blues, purples, reds, and oranges.

There is another side to Rogers' work that is more realist in tone and that can be seen in her paintings of night scenes. Here again she takes interest in how light can illuminate surroundings, but instead of sunlight, it is light cast by the moon, headlights of cars, and streetlights.  These paintings reveal influences of painters such as Edward Hopper and invite the spectator to see a scene that he or she might have otherwise passed by. In Streets and Structures, those who are already fans and collectors of one of the Lowcountry's finest artists as well as those who are new to her work will be left with a new sense of appreciation and wonder for a truly unique city.
