November Issue 2009

Fountainside Gallery in Wilmington, NC, Offers Holiday Exhibition

Fountainside Gallery in Wilmington, NC, will present the exhibit, Holiday Treasures, featuring small paintings by gallery artists, on view from Nov. 27 through Dec. 30, 2009. This collection of beautiful works presents the collector with an array of styles, subjects and sizes perfect for gifting or collecting.

The show will include works by: Jacob Cooley, Paula Holtzclaw, M.T. McClanahan, Trey Finney, Kathleen Newman, Christine Debrosky, Anda Styler, David Weiss, Joe Seme, Rick McClure, Andre Kohn, Rani Garner, Mike Rooney, Hilda Spain-Owen and Sandy Nelson.

Jacob Cooley, whose works are included in the Nasher Museum of Art in Durham, NC, paints beautifully designed contemporary landscapes, mainly of the coastal marshes. Paula Holtzclaw similarly treats the low-country marshes as the main focus of her work and also includes seascape and rural scenes in her repertoire. Her depictions of far horizons and infinite skies are a hallmark of her art. M.T. McClanahan offers another look at the coast, but his subjects are the marinas, skiffs, fishing boats and other coastal icons painted in a fresh, broken-stroke impressionist style. McClanahan's paintings, which are mainly large, will be scaled down for this exhibit.

South Carolina artist Trey Finney is a true colorist, painting glistening landscapes and wildlife. Finney's impressionistic style with an emphasis on color, drawing, and an underlying abstract design allows for an interpretation, rather than an artistic copy of a particular subject. Chicago artist Kathleen Newman also has a strong underlying sense of abstract design in her paintings, but her subjects range from landscape of the countryside to her travels in Venice and other exotic locales. Newman, whether working in oil or pastel, considers her paintings to be a representation of the outside world and a reflection of her response to its beauty. Christine Debrosky, who recently moved to the Sedona, AZ area, paints landscapes of her area and her travels. She has the unique ability to see and capture the transient effect of light which transforms the ordinary to the extraordinary.

Connecticut artist Anda Styler renders landscapes, harbors and pristine cottages in her inimitable style. Her acrylics are at once vibrant and loose, and most of all, charming. David Weiss of Nebraska is a old-school tonalist who uses low-key value and harmonizing color to create his peaceful, zen landscapes, rivers and marshes. Wilmington artist Joe Seme specializes in incredibly detailed, sporting still life and "trompe l'oeil" (fool the eye) paintings. His depictions of Americana and folk art antiques, hunting and fishing artifacts, sports memorabilia, and antique toys as subjects have won him numerous collectors.

Rick McClure, an Oklahoma artist who makes numerous forays to the Carolinas to paint, is an award winning plein air painter and teacher. His passion for painting outdoors, either in the city, the country or the coast shows in his sparkling oils. Mike Rooney is another outdoor painting enthusiast who actually never works in a studio. He can be seen out painting his home area of Topsail, NC, or anywhere up and down the coast, making his expressive small oils and friends along the way. Georgia painter Rani Garner depicts the natural light on the land in oil. Her interpretations of rural areas and the coastlines are all-encompassing, with a dazzling sense of light and beauty.

Russian transplant Andre Kohn now lives in California where he continues the impressionist traditions learned in his native Russia. His use of a limited palette and signature brushwork is highly individual, as are his paintings of the figure, whether it is an old woman cleaning or children at the shore. Equally individual are the works of Hilda Spain-Owen who has narrowed her artistic passion to painting figures, either animal or human. Bold sizes, bright colors and unique textures contribute to her tactile works. Wilmington painter Sandy Nelson is an award-winning oil and pastel artist who's equally at home with landscape, figure and still life. Her work was chosen for the 2010 Azalea Festival for its official posters and prints.
