Spencer Art Gallery II in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Jan Sasser

Spencer Art Gallery II in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Water, Woods, and Wild Things, featuring new and recent oil studies by Jan Sasser, on view from Nov. 6 - 13, 2009.

Sasser's canvases are strikingly consistent in their realism and devotion to the magic and beauty to be found in the habitats of the Carolina lowcountry and favorite retreats near family on the Florida gulf coast and Northern California. She strives to bring viewers out of their everyday world and into the scene with her, gazing at clouds above the ocean, paddling toward the light on a tree canopied creek, or discovering wading birds and native plants from a canoe or walking path.

"In nature, certain varieties of seed may fall and lay dormant for many years before conditions allow them to sprout and grow to maturity. That, in essence, describes my career in art." The "seeds" of Sasser's interest formed during her childhood in Alabama, inspired by relatives who drew and painted. Food was stored in the seed through art courses at Alabama's JSU. However, much of Sasser's adult life centered on human service roles. She married and came to Charleston in 1989. After many years in geriatrics, the "time and conditions in my life were right for the seed to sprout."

Sasser returned to art in 2003. In addition to membership in Spencer Art Gallery II, she is a multiple ribbon winner in area shows, an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild, and was recently accepted by Oil Painters of America. She is a juried participant in Charleston's Annual Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit and the 2010 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.
