Corrigan Gallery LLC in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Lynne Riding

Corrigan Gallery LLC in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Scratching the Surface, featuring new works by Lynne Riding, on view from Nov. 2 - 30, 2011. A reception will be held on Nov. 4, from 5-8:30pm in conjunction with the Charleston Fine Art Dealers’ Association’s Fine Art Annual Weekend. This is her third solo show at the gallery.

Lynne Riding expresses the vastness of intimacy and a lifetime of notions of place in an abstract manner. Her manifestation of surroundings includes nature’s realty as well as its concept. Creating stories of roots in all senses – from whence she comes, literally and figuratively – where she has been and where she is – without concrete images, Riding makes a silent recording of place and passage. It is portraiture in a broad sense. It comes from and takes the viewer to areas of deeper consciousness.

Viewing these works one begins to have a real sense of the value of stream of consciousness – the flow of thoughts and words, of lives and places – streamlined into the minimalism of these abstractions. With both the passage and resistance of this stream, the artist creates an awareness that relates to time as space.

Following a continuing theme in her work, Riding reaffirms that “Although my work is of an abstract nature, it always stems from the place and surroundings in which I find myself, from color observed, a line seen in space, or the found object. My interests lie the not so blatant, crude or obvious. I continue to develop a reductive painting process, involving what to bury and what to reveal.”

Riding continues, “As a result of a residency during the summer of 2009, when I endeavored to find a way to incorporate more of a sense of place into the work that I was making, I have experimented with the use of some natural material in my work. This recent work includes selected natural material specific to place. My work is concerned with the ephemeral nature of what we call reality, aligned with the dichotomy of enduring hope, that, which drives humankind on...I believe that there is a validity or need for the poetic in today’s world.”

Riding has lived in Charleston for the past twenty years and holds a Masters of Fine Art from the San Francisco Art Institute, a Bachelors of Art in Fashion - Textiles from Manchester College of Art, UK and an Art Foundation from Hereford School of Art & Design, UK.

Currently academic chair of department at the Art Institute of Charleston, she continues to develop her own work. She has had solo exhibitions at Zane Bennett Contemporary, Santa Fe and Beaufort Arts Council, as well as in Charleston. Her work has been included in group exhibitions such as the 2011 and the 2003 Contemporary Charleston- Influence, City Gallery, 30th Parallel- a Convergence of Contemporary Painting at the JMOMA, Florida and CYMK in the TransAmerica Pyramid, San Francisco, CA. She also showed in Charlotte, NC, Trizec - 13th Annual and Places and Spaces: Landscape and Genre Scenes in the South, Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston.
