The death of a successful artist often brings hope amidst grief. This holds true for Charlotte art dealer, Larry Elder, who recently was successful in his negotiations to purchase the paintings, drawings, and all rights associated with estate of Carl Plansky, who died in October 2009. The acquisition will enable the public to view and purchase artwork never shown in a public setting.

The transfer of ownership took place in early October 2011. The collection contains in excess of three-hundred original paintings and drawings.

For approximately seven years Elder Gallery was one of several who represented the work of the New York-based artist. As the years ensued a close relationship was formed between artist and dealer and success followed. Elder’s gallery became one of Plansky’s most successful venues.

Plansky operated studios in Brooklyn, Budapest, and East Meredith, New York, the latter of which was also home to his oil paint manufacturing business, Williamsburg Oil Paint for Artists. His dedication and work ethic enabled him to build a vast collection of paintings and drawings over the thirty-plus years of his career.

As a young artist in New York, Plansky’s recognized talent placed him in the company of several well-known artists including Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Milton Resnick and Joan Mitchell who became his mentor and advisor. His career was launched in New York during the late 1970s.

“The acquisition of the Plansky Collection brings excitement as well as a serious responsibility for the perpetuation of an important artist’s work,” says Elder. “Our goal is to introduce the Plansky Collection to additional museums and retail outlets around the United States and Europe.”
