City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Exhibition Features Works by Douglas Balentine

The City Gallery, of the City of Charleston, at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of oil on linen by local artist J. Douglas Balentine from Dec. 1-31, entitled Sullivan's Island Series.

Balentine was born in 1968 and raised in Charleston, SC. In 1977 and 1978, his family moved to Paris where he was exposed to classical art in the Louvre and other museums. This early exposure to the Old Masters proved to be a lasting inspiration. While continuing to draw and paint throughout elementary and high school, Balentine decided to pursue a formal art education. He moved to New York City in 1987 to attend the Parsons School of Design, which allowed him to fully pursue his desire to draw from the figure. After receiving a BFA degree, he enrolled in the Parson MFA program, which at that time was still based on the French atelier system. He currently lives in Charleston with his wife and two children.

Balentine comments on his work: "My art is a cognitive exploration of inner and other realities in which usual stimuli have the potential to become meaningful poetic expressions when fused with the rigor of discipline."
