Works from the 1990's by William Halsey at Eva Carter Gallery in Charleston, SC

Eva Carter Gallery in Charleston, SC, is proud to present a powerful exhibition celebrating the work of Charleston abstract expressionist William Halsey. William Halsey- Selected Works from the 1990's will open to the public with the French Quarter Art Walk on Dec. 1 and continue through Dec. 31.

Halsey worked professionally as an artist from 1937 until his death in 1999. During the last decade of his life he produced some of his strongest and most experimental work. From large, vibrant oil on masonite pieces to smaller paintstick and oil pastels on paper, the intense color and rich line quality of the works represent Halsey's mature, later period work at its best.

In 1996, Jeffrey Day of the State newspaper said the following about Halsey's work, "There's a tendency to talk about how remarkable the work is, how solid and finely done and vibrant, and how amazing it is that he's done this. And one reason you say this is because Halsey is 81. That's a disservice to Halsey. This work would be strong if he was 50 - or 40 or 30."

This is what the artist had to say about his work in 1998, " I take a tube of paint and work on an irregular surface. I have an abhorrence of brushes. I like layers - colors underneath. I don't like things too regular. Tubes of oil-sticks- like mosaics or jewels set in. There's no subject, no center of interest: no head, no figure. Allover space and color space - an arrangement like stained glass. I like oil-sticks on paper; I can revisit them in a day. I frequently go back and work things out."
